3 Half Marathons in 3 Weekends

Fort Worth Half Marathon – Run Like a Cheetah

Official finish time: 13.29 miles = 2:17:07
Unofficial finish time: 13.10 miles = 2:15:23

I am okay with my official finish time and will record it in my log book. There were minor course adjustments due to the recent rain and my theory is we all ran the same course, long or short, so the official finish time is official. I marked my Garmin at 13.1 then again at the finish line. Everyone I talked with had almost .20 more on their Garmin. My reason for including my unofficial finish time is that the Honored Hero course was 13.1 on my Garmin, today’s course and weather were almost identical and today’s run was a 7 second PR from Honored Hero.

I ran both half marathons without ever stopping one single time, but today I took water from each of the aid stations. This was a challenge as plastic cups do not crease as easily as paper cups. Thankfully I never choked or drowned myself!

There were at least 10 Heels and Hills and several Love the Half runners at today’s event. Two ladies wore their classic black Heels and Hills shirts. Around mile 10 a lady commented on how strong I was running then started a small conversation. Her legs, feet, etc were hurting and she concerned about the last four miles. I was thrilled to let her know the mile markers were off by one and we were actually at mile 10, not mile 9. While chatting I learned that she ran Heels and Hills and Him. We had run near each other the entire race and decided to stay together for motivation and pacing in the final miles. She was on a super PR pace so I encouraged her go ahead and run strong once we completed mile 13.

Another strong run and I am very happy to not be running a half marathon next week end! I am still overwhelmed when I think about the fact that my "new" pace really is consistent and a sub 2:00 half marathon is within reach.

Race Plan/ Race Results
A: Run strong with intensity, but don’t race – Ran every step of the race, again
B: Run an avg pace consistent with the past two weekends – 10:20, 09:54, 10:19

Happy Birthday To Me!

I really, really, really wanted to run a half marathon on my birthday. Imagine my surprise last Sunday when I was discovered the Bud E. Bee Boo! Run on the Love the Half website. Yes, I am aware LTH is my website, but Libby is the webmaster… Todd went to the golf course for less than one hour and when he returned I promptly said “I know what I want for my birthday. We are boarding the dogs, you can play golf at Lake Whitney on Friday and Saturday, we will spend Friday night in Cleburne and I will run a half marathon on Saturday”. Like the good husband he always is he replied with “Sounds like a great plan”.

I immediately consulted my October running log to confirm the mileage I would need to run MON – FRI to ensure I hit my monthly goal of 100 miles and allow my legs to recover from this morning’s PR half marathon. Then I waited several more days before registering to confirm that my legs had fully recovered.

When I picked up my packet the lady said “Are you Heels and Hills? We are so thrilled you are running our new half marathon”. I learned the registration numbers were approximately 40 runners. Wow, maybe I’ll place in my age group! Since there wasn’t much to do in Cleburne I thought I would drive the course. Upon arriving at the hotel I called the Race Director to get more details about the course. While talking with him I learned there were approximately 15 runners in the half marathon. The 40 runners included the 5K and 10K. Wow, maybe I’ll win the Master Division! (the awards were only Top 3 Male and Top 3 Female). The course included several hills, but all appeared very doable and the weather forecast was absolutely perfect. I knew this race was going to be the best birthday present ever.

We had already decided to postpone my birthday dinner until post race and I did not want to eat anywhere “new” so we picked Chili’s. I decided carbo loading is overrated and had my all time favorite – a rib eye. Of course Todd insisted on his all time favorite -- dessert. We enjoyed a nice relaxing “non-puppies” evening then got to bed early. Todd had to leave by 7:00 to make his tee time and I got to sleep until 7:00 as the start line was less than 5 miles from the hotel.

The temperature was 43 degrees at the start then 62 degrees at the finish with 5mph winds. There appeared to be approximately 20 half marathoners at the start. I passed a few runners in the first mile then held my position for the remainder of the race. I will be curious to find out where I placed in the results as I passed approximately 5 runners while I driving back to the hotel. It was a two loop course so I seldom saw any other runners. Running alone gave me a lot of time to reflect on how much running has changed my life. I am blessed to have the opportunity to share the journey and this half marathon was the perfect birthday present!

Race Plan/ Race Results
A: Run strong with intensity, but don’t race – I ran the pace my body was giving me
B: Run a consistent pace – I didn’t realize I was strong enough to maintain a sub 10:00 pace. I chose to take one walk break then slow the pace for lap 2. I need to save my legs since I ran a half marathon 6 days ago and will run another half marathon in 8 days.
C: Run for a Personal Record – New PR by 4 minute – 2:11:12. A total 8 min PR in one week!!!

Mile splits (09:54 avg pace)
M1: 10:04 – might be a little fast as there are a several hills and gradual inclines
M2: 09:51 – maybe this pace isn’t too fast. hill #1 completed
M3: 09:39
M4: 09:38 – sun is coming out so off with the long sleeved shirt
M5: 09:42 – hill #2 completed
M6: 09:45 – 10K = 59:58 = 4 min PR!
First Lap = 01:04 = 09:46 avg pace!

M7: 09:40 – feeling great, but chose not to keep a fast pace and simply enjoy the run
M8: 10:42 –walk break + gel; hill #3 completed
M9: 09:59 -- new goal is to have fun knowing sub 10:00 min miles equal another 4 min PR
M10: 09:59
M11: 09:56 – hill #4 completed

Honored Hero Half Marathon

Today, I ran my first half marathon!

I have completed over 30 half marathons, but I have never run EVERY single step. Nor have I ever run 2 hours and 15 minutes without stopping! I ate my gels while running and carried my own water, which I always do, so I would not have to stop at any of the aid stations.

In my Cowtown Ultra Marathon blog post, Feb 2009, I asked “Will I ever like running in Trinity Park?” The answer is “yes”. Today’s course was 6.5 miles out and back along the Trinity River. It was windy the entire race, but the temperature was perfect. The sun came out for a little while then it became overcast.

I went to Ft Worth alone and saw a few people that I knew. There were ladies behind me at mile 2 talking about Heels and Hills and I saw a Love the Half shirt at the turn around point. I did a shout out to Angie (TIR teammate) and Lolita (Mellew Run Team) around mile 7 or 8.

Race Plan/ Race Results
A: Run strong with intensity, but don’t race – Ran every step of the race
B: Run a consistent pace of 10:19 – Ran a 10:20 average

Ending the Streak?

Today was the first day that would have been a good day to end my running streak…

I did not want to get up and run this morning. So I didn’t.

I did not want to run on the treadmill after work. So I didn’t.

All I had to do to keep the streak alive was run was ONE mile. I decided to run outside in hopes I would get in the groove. Unfortunately, that never did happen. The first mile lasted forever and was a 10:51.

How was I ever going to run 100 miles this month? I ran one mile out so I would have to run one mile back. Two miles is an acceptable run. Then I had a heart to heart about digging deep and going for my sub 10:30 goal. It was at that point I took a detour which would be one half mile “out” to finish mile two with a 10:32.

Mile three was an uneventful 10:30 as I knew was on the “back” of both out and back segments and would finish up with 3.1 miles.

While it was a good day to end my running streak – I didn't! And the alarm is already set for tomorrow morning’s run…

Streak Days 25 - 26

Saturday morning was a bright and early 5.6 miles walk as Libby and I marked the 5K, 10K and 15K courses for the “A Dollar a K” race in the morning. Our original plan was to run, but we quickly discovered we could not run holding 15 orange utility flags, the course map AND watch our Garmin for mileage markings. Not to mention we couldn’t talk either!

The rest of the day was spent purchasing supplies, getting the water station supplies ready, putting mile marker signs in order (note: the return signs for three overlapping distances is a challenge), cutting bagels then finally loading the car. I also spent all afternoon following hubby online as he playing in his first Amateur golf tournament. He was in the lead then lost by one stroke :) He supports me and I support him. I always say “golf and running make our marriage very happy”.

Oddly enough, I felt guilty all day because I had not run my daily 5K. As soon as hubby got home I headed out the door to run three miles in the neighborhood. He brought the dogs out for a walk and they immediately tracked me down. I stopped at two miles, but all guilt was gone as I was being loved by my happy little family and we had much to celebrate.

Sunday was a whole different story! I was up at 4:30 am to set up the Heels and Hills course. Two of our volunteers had cancelled at the last minute so I was scrambling to put out all of the markers and set up the water stations. Did I mention the race started 30 minutes earlier than normal? Earlier in the week I had naively thought I might have time check out the course during the event by running from the 15K turn around to the 10K turn around and back for my 5K. That never happened and all I did was drive, drive, drive during the entire event and saw almost none of the participants. I just smiled as this is the life of an "Operations" Race Director. Libby is "Technology" Race Director and we make a great team!!

Although I was completely exhausted when I returned home and it was already 90 degrees I knew I had better run my 5K immediately or it would never happen. It was pure adrenaline that kept the streak alive, including negative splits and sub 11 avg pace.

Streak Days 20 - 24

THREE weeks on running every WORK day! This is probably the most unbelievable piece of this streak.

Monday’s run included 16mph winds making the mile two negative split hard earned! (10:31 avg pace)

Tuesday’s morning run was postponed to the evening. It was a yes, no, yes, no morning as I ran the first half mile in the rain while the lightning continued to increase. The streak was on my mind ALL day and I could hardly wait to get home from work and run. It was hot so I had to alter my normal route in search of shade. Another successful workout including negative splits and sub 11 average pace. (10:57 avg pace)

Wednesday’s super, duper run was a complete surprise as mile three was a 10:08!! My legs were tired from running late on Tuesday so I almost opted for a treadmill run. This run proved showing up counts and you never know how a run will turn out. (10:30 avg pace)

Thursday morning was off to a very slow start. Thankfully everything came together in mile two and I was able t maintain the negative split and sub 11 avg pace streak. (10:44 avg pace)

Friday was another run in the rain. Interestingly enough it was raining in my neighborhood, but not outside the gate. I ran the three miles outside the gate then once I was back inside it was still raining. Good thing I didn’t cancel the run based on the rain outside my front door. The old Paula might have cancelled... (10:29 avg pace)

Streak Days 18 - 19

Saturday was the first time I have run at White Rock Lake since training for Houston Marathon in January. I was soooo burned out on looping the lake every weekend for almost one year and needed a break. That burn out plus work challenges resulted in only 5 short runs in 4 months. What a train wreck after running 2-3 times a week for over a year… Thank you to Libby and Sarah for offering to drive to “my side” of the Metroplex and for jump starting my running. Now we run every weekend and rotate between Campion Trails or Chisholm Trail.

What a fun run it was!! Our plan was to wear our Heels and Hills pink and cheer on the DRC training groups and those running the Too Hot Too Handle 5K/15K. We picked our start location so that we could see the DRC training group at their turn around point and also cheer the THTH runners twice. An added bonus was seeing so many Galloway runners that I met 4-5 years ago when I was the Program Director and they were training for their FIRST marathon. I love, love, love running and helping others reach their new running and walking goals! Again, what a fun run it was! Libby wanted to run a 12:00 minute pace, but I “knew” she could run faster and still have energy to talk and cheer. Again, the NYC half is 30 days away and Libby’s “long term” goal is an 11:30 pace. We averaged 11:20ish for the first five miles, walked and talked mile 6, then averaged 11:15ish for the final three miles. For added excitement, Libby wanted to run the extra .3 in hopes of a new 15K PR. Had it not been for the fun, fun, fun mile six she would have gotten her PR. For me, right now, I simply love running!

I was a little sad when I went to bed Saturday night as lots of runners were getting ready for the midnight start of El Scorcho 25K/50K. I know running in the dark in July sounds crazy, but El Scorcho really is a neat event. I ran it in 2008 and the heat kicked my butt. Common sense prevailed this year…

Sunday’s run was another daily 5K in the July streak. My plan was to run early in hopes the cooler temps would allow me to try a few mile repeats. I was more tired than I realized and opted to be lazy and sleep in. The downside of sleeping eleven hours is that I didn’t start runing until 9:00 and it was getting warm. The good news is my pace was good and I felt strong. The best news of all is that Todd waited for me to finish running then we headed to the golf course together!

Sat 01:51:40 – 11:17, 11:36, 11:38, 11:11, 11:30, 17:41, 11:20, 11:12, 11:07, 03:05 (Avg 12:00)

Streak Days 13 - 17

Again, I can’t believe I have achieved the goal of running every WORK day for two weeks!!

Monday was almost a train wreck as I did not run before going to the office. I had to go in early and handle an issue before an “asap” meeting. I was in a horrible mood ALL day, but was determined to not break the streak. I finally squeezed in a treadmill run at 8:30 p.m. Note to self: DO NOT let work get in the way of the streak….

Tuesday’s goal was simply to run and get the pre-work running streak back on track. Mission accomplished! (10:56 avg pace)

A combination of temps, humidity and wind made Wednesday’s entire run seemed like a struggle. My splits were strong and evenly paced so no whining allowed. (10:47 avg pace)

Thursday morning was another yes, no, yes, no debate. Wednesday was a late night at the office capped off with two Tylenol PM so I wanted to stay in the bed… Reality is the heat index will be 100+ after work and I am not in the mood for another treadmill run, so GET UP and run!! (10:57 avg pace)

Friday morning’s run included an ever so slight drizzle. My heart wanted to do mile repeats, but my head knew the next day included a 9.3 mile loop of the lake. Common sense prevailed and I ran for fun. (10:38 avg pace)

Daily 5K
Mon 33:23 – treadmill run -- 5.5 mph 2.75 miles, 6.5 mph .35 miles
Tues 33:55 – 11:24, 10:59, 10:34, 00:59
Wed 33:26 – 10:52, 10:43, 10:49, 01:01

Streak Days 11 - 12

Plan A – Group Run on Saturday at Chisholm Trail, shower at the gym then go to the office. (3 yes, 1 no)
Plan B – Group Run on Sunday as I am tired from work and I have to work on Saturday. (3 yes, 1 no)
Plan C – Group Run on Saturday at Campion Trails, shower at home then go to the office. (3 yes)
Plan D – Group Run on Sunday at Chisholm Trail as others are my priority! (5 yes)

Libby, Sarah and I met at Campion Trails for another love/hate run! Our goal was to mark the 10K course for the Heels and Hills “A Dollar a K”. Libby was having an “I don’t wanna run” day and I wasn’t showing much sympathy… We are good enough friends to automatically give plenty of space when one of us is crabby! Libby dropped slightly back then thought she was struggling, but in reality I was running a faster pace to ensure she would keep her 11:30 pace. Sarah was feeling strong and my goal was to not let her walk in the final miles. She asked if we had completed four miles and I replied “yes”, but opted to omit that we were almost finished with five miles. As usual I picked up the pace for the final miles and they both responded to the challenge!!! Sarah was thrilled with a final 10:35 mile and Libby was thrilled with an overall 11:39 pace. Another successful love/hate run in the record books, hurry home for dog duty and a shower then head to the office.

Sunday was a wonderful run with old and new friends. Plan D was for Libby, Steve and me to meet at Chisholm Trail for an easy 4 miles. Steve’s brother in law, Rod, was in town and runs a little faster. Thanks to Wendy for joining Rod for a faster pace. As it turned out, all five of us ran the first two miles as a group. I decided to raise my own bar and run with Wendy and Rod for the final two miles. We ran a 10:10 then a 9:45!! Steve is new to distance running so I smiled as Libby became the coach and offered to pace Steve for the final two miles. She did let him have a 15 second walk break, but then it was back to running. Where did she learn to be so tough??? Thankfully I did not have to work today so we all went for coffee at Starbucks and good conversation.

I love, love, love running with others as they reach their new running goals!

Sat 01:09:35 – 11:26, 11:27, 11:20, 11:18, 11:10, 10:35, 2:15 (Avg 11:22)

Streak Days 6 – 10

OMG! I actually achieved this goal! I ran every morning before going to the office and worked 12 hour days Mon, Tue and Wed. Updating my status on Facebook was the perfect level of accountability.

Monday’s high was a carryover of the previous five days. The streak began with vacation, holiday and weekend days and the big question was would an incredibly stressful work week cause a break in the streak?

Tuesday’s goal was two mile repeats of one mile out then one mile back. While returning home I realized if I kept my focus on mile three I might have a sub 30 min 5K so I went for it. 30:07 :)

Just running on Wednesday was a huge success because I worked until 9pm on Tuesday, then couldn’t turn off my mind until well past midnight.

Thursday’s weather was hot and humid. I decided to take what the morning was bringing and simply enjoy running. Soon after entering the house it began to rain which confirmed the high humidity wasn’t my imagination.

Hubby was out of town, so Friday morning’s challenge was to integrate dog duty into my “new” morning routine and still get to the office on time. After getting up even earlier and taking our walk, the dogs lined up and patiently watched me run on the treadmill.

Streak Days 4 - 5

Saturday was the Fourth of July and it was hot as a firecracker!! Today’s run was a 10K with Libby, Sarah and Steve. As much as I enjoy running local Fourth of July races, I didn’t want to start at 8:00 am. We started at 6:30 am and decided to include a one minute walk break at each mile. Did I mention that the 11:30 avg goal pace remained? And so began another love/hate run between me and Libby. Any time she wanted to drop back I encouraged her to stay with me, focus on form and I would adjust our pace. Sarah took an extra walk around mile four, but came back strong with in no time. We took an extra walk break at mile five then it was dead ahead for the final 1.2 miles! Libby reminded me of her 10K PR in January when the temps were 42 degrees. She says that I am no Mark O!!! While we missed her new PR by 32 seconds I am confident the Fall will bring many fast racing miles. Steve completed his first five miler! I love, love, love training runners and walkers as they reach for new goals.

We slept in with the pups on Sunday then I had a nice run in cooler temps and drizzling rain. Trying to run fast wasn’t my goal so it was a pleasant surprise when each mile was faster than the previous mile resulting in an avg pace of 10:12. Tomorrow morning is the first real streak test as it is back to work and the real world.

Looking for shade

What a difference an hour makes. I opted to be a little lazy and slept in which resulted in this morning’s run being hot, hot, hot. I ran in and around the neighborhood along the brick wall in hopes of staying in the shade. It pays to be short, ha, ha!

I’ve decided to change my plan to a Daily 5K. I know the temps will be cooler in the Fall and these runs will help me reach my goal of a consistent sub 30:00 5K. Tomorrow is a 5-6 mile run with friends.

Vacation Day #2

The months of May and June were complete train wrecks as computer conversion #2 launched, H&H was cancelled and our entire downstairs was packed up as we repaired the floor. Well, hello to July… Vacation Day #1 was a HUGE success!! The day started with another run where I could simply enjoy connecting with my thoughts. Thanks to the Fly Lady timer my de-cluttering plan stayed on track.

Taking my life back!

July is all about taking my life back! Two software conversions in the past year have zapped ALL of my energy and brain cells. I was supposed to be on vacation all week, but duty called so I worked Monday and Tuesday. My goal was to combine vacation days with a long holiday weekend in hopes I could sleep a little late, run for fun, de-clutter the house and replenish my soul.

Thanks to my Fly Lady timer everything is going as planned…

Cowtown ULTRA Marathon

My Bucket List

For me, The Cowtown Ultra Marathon was about my Bucket List. Tera (Asst RD) and I have been friends since 2000. We visited at the WR expo to discuss my Bucket List and the Ultra Marathon. I e-mailed her to confirm I would register for the ultra while at the Houston Marathon expo. Imagine the look of shock when Libby and Peggy realized I was registering for the ultra!

Is the Bucket List debatable when race morning temps are 40 degrees with 25+ mph winds??? No, there can be no debate. The Bucket List is about living life to the fullest so I take what the day gives me, lace up my shoes, then I go for it! Not only am I running the Ultra by myself, there are only 140 runners registered for the Ultra. (118 finishers)

Race Plan
Plan A: complete the Ultra (12:00+ goal pace – thanks Coach Cathy)
Plan B: split off at mile 8 with the half marathoners
Plan C: split off at mile 23 with the marathoners

Race thoughts and mile splits (13:07 avg pace)
M1: 11:12 Yes, it is cold and windy!! I hate gloves, but I should have brought them. Thank goodness for the trash bag I snagged from the side of the road and my new shirt with thumb holes. (expo sale)
M2: 11:07 Maybe I’ll run with the 5:15 pace group. Not working.
M3: 11:03
M4: 10:50
M5: 11:23 WOW, now the marathon starts! I hear Cathy saying “slow down”.
M6: 11:26 Stop to remove one layer of clothing. Why did I overdress?? Libby is surely cussing me.
M7: 12:10 See first person with an Ultra bib – Hector. Are the other 138 runners all ahead of us?
M8: 11:39 The half marathoners split off. Plan B is no more.
M9: 11:45 Focus on slowing to a 12:00+ pace. Walk the up hills. Run the down hills.
M10: 12:08 More focus on a slower pace plus a 30 second port-a-let stop.
M11: 11:55
M12: 11:54 Déjà vu - enter Trinity Park. Home of El Scorch 25K. The Bucket List 2008.
M13: 11:49
M14: 12:44 Déjà vu – Colonial Golf - In 2000, I came to run 8 miles of a relay, but ran 18 miles.
M15: 12:44
M16: 14:11 The sunshine is beautiful. I am soooo overdressed!
M17: 14:27 Stop to remove wind vest and push up leggings. Why didn’t I wear shorts?
M18: 13:20 No wind, but lots of shade. Now I am cold. Re-apply the layers. Why didn’t I bring gloves?
M19: 16:19 The North wind is almost stopping me in my tracks! This is two miles of a gradual uphill…
M20: 16:09 Call Todd at home. WHAT is the deal with the wind? He says “28 mph gusting to 34 mph”
M21: 14:06 Call Jean-Maria. You ran the half marathon, go home. No need to wait for me to finish.
M22: 14:57 Call Libby. I am closer to 13:00 pace. Stay at the hotel. Plenty of time for a nap!
M23: 13:52 The marathoners split off. Plan C is no more. Déjà vu –El Scorcho start/finish line.
M24: 15:30 El Scorcho was at midnight and hot as hell. Now it is the unrelenting damn North wind!!
M25: 14:38 This area is wide open, but it seemed so narrow when only a flash light guided the way. M26: 16:08 One more mile into the wind, up hill then U-turn. Will I ever enjoy running at Trinity Park?
M27: 13:12 With the wind at my back, running along the Trinity River is fun. Maybe I like Trinity Park.
M28: 13:43 Pick it up, but save energy. Jean-Maria said the final two miles are up hill.
M29: 12:39 Enjoy the slight down hill. Tera hugs me and screams “Paula is an Ultra Marathoner”!
M30: 13:48 Yes, it is up hill. Hector goes out of sight as he enters the final turns.
M31: 13:40 More up hill and twisty turns. Then the FINISH LINE!!!

Finish Line Celebrations
The 17,000+ runners and their spectators were all gone. Only the finish line clock and banners remained as the final ultra marathoners finished, but who cared?? Todd, Libby and Jean-Maria were loudly cheering me as I completed the final half mile. After I crossed the finish line they all came over to give me congratulatory hugs. I was blessed by having the opportunity to share this experience with them. More great news followed as I learned that both Libby and Jean-Maria had a PR in the half marathon! Although, the ultra marathon was about my Bucket List I will return to Cowtown for the next four year as it will take five finisher medals to complete the star. Click here to read about the

A Personal Record

OMG! Tonight was a great run! I beat my 5 mile PR by 3:34. An avg of 10:16 and the last mile was a 9:41 :) :) :) I LOVE running on cool clear nights. Off to shower then log back on for a few more hours of "real job" work.

What's My Workout???

I left the office at 8PM determined to return to the TUE/THU speed sessions. Before shutting down my computer I pulled up our Houston training schedule. 5 - 5 min x 2 min walk/jog @ 9:52 - 10:13. Hmmm, no speed workouts since Oct...

I was able to complete the first 5 minute cycle. I am okay that my walk breaks ended up being a little longer than 2 minutes, but I did run all 25 minutes at a 10:00 min pace.

It's almost 10PM, but I did it. Nothing like watching the Biggest Loser while on the treadmill :) Bring on THU's speed session!

Houston Marathon LSD

The 5 day forecast was 41 degrees with a high of 60. The 1 day forecast was 68 degrees, 80% humidity with a high of 85. I wish my job allowed me to TOTALLY miss my forecast projections!

Houston Marathon is in two weeks, I missed my 20 and 22 mile training runs. My last long run, 18 miles, was 6 weeks ago. Today’s goal was to get 23 miles on my legs pre-marathon. It wasn’t pretty - 9 miles running then 14 miles walking…. Why did we park the car 7 miles from the lake? So we couldn’t quit!

Will I run Houston Marathon? I don’t know. If I survive the long work hours for the next two weeks and the forecast is weather perfect, I will probably run. If I don’t run my ego will remain fully intact. This is marathon #17. I haven’t run a marathon in 3+ years. I didn’t want to run another marathon unless I raised the bar and trained to break 5 hours. I trained perfectly from August until I got what I thought was a routine cold the first week of November. The doctor was quite surprised I was able to run 16, 12 and 18 miles, but said “NO” when I asked about my upcoming 20 miler. Was it because my x-rays revealed bronchitis and pre-pneumonia and I had just finished a breathing treatment? I didn’t run a step for 2 weeks then ran the DWRM half marathon. Thankfully my finish time confirmed my training was still on target. Then I caught another cold resulting in more meds and 2 weeks of no running.

Why would I run Houston Marathon? The same reason I stared down the Texas heat all summer to run 4 miles, hit the wall, walk 5 miles. My health has declined in both 2007 and 2008. Running and completing races literally keeps my foot in the game and is the only way I know I am continuing to win my battle against MS.

Thank you, Peggy, Frances and Ken. Without each of you, a sub 5 marathon may have remained only a dream. If it isn’t Houston, I know I will achieve this goal.

I am a Runner!

New Year's Day. Rolled out of bed. Brushed my teeth and put on my running clothes.

I have been battling upper respiratory infections since the DRC half marathon. Today was my first run since DWRM half marathon. I ran 2 miles, coughed 2 minutes then ran 2 more miles. I missed both my 20 and 23 mile training runs and Houston Marathon is approx two weeks away.
I am a runner and began the New Year as always -- running :)
